Besides football, he is good public speaker and motivational speaker, although he is not, but,  every words coming out from his mouth, gives us motivation. his impact on Indian football goes beyond just his achievements on the field. He has played a pivotal role in shaping the football future in India, inspiring a new generation, and helping the country believe in its football potential.


Born on 3 August 1984, his ancester belongs to nepal, his father KB Chhetri is a retired Indian army, and his mother Sushila Chhetri is a housewife. he started playing football, at an early age because his mother represent nepal in international level, so there is a support from his mother side.

He started his football journey with a local Delhi club called, City Club in 2001 2 and played in the 2002 Durand Cup. Even though his team didn't make it to the quarterfinals, his performance stood out, catching the attention of Mohun Baagan. Just two months later, he was invited for a trial in Kolkata.

After a successful week-long trial, Chhetri signed his first professional contract with Mohun Baagan in 2002. His impressive play made him stand out across Indian clubs. 


His early years at Mohun Baagan showed his potential and kickstarted his amazing football career. he has played for over 10 clubs, facing tough challenges, including difficult times abroad and playing in a country where football wasn’t the most popular sport. His ability to overcome these obstacles teaches young players to embrace challenges and not get discouraged by setbacks.

Sunil Chhetri's international football journey started in 2004 when he played for India under 20 at the South Asian Games, scoring twice against Bhutan. He quickly moved up to the senior national team, scoring his first goal on his debut against Pakistan in 2005. By 2019, he became the only Indian among the top 10 international goalscorers.


Chhetri made a big impact on the Indian team in various tournaments. He helped India win the 2007 Nehru Cup by scoring four goals, including two in the final. He also played a key role in the 2008 Saff Championship and the AFC Challenge Cup, where his hat-trick in the final against Tajikistan secured India's spot in the 2011 Asian Cup.


Even after facing injuries, he continued to shine. He scored in the 2009 Nehru Cup final and impressed at the 2011 Asian Cup with goals against Bahrain and South Korea. He set a new record at the 2011 Saff Championship by scoring seven goals in one edition.

Chhetri was made captain of the national team for the 2012 AFC Challenge Cup qualification. In the 2018 Intercontinental Cup final, he scored twice, matching Lionel Messi's 64 international goals. He also played a crucial role in India's qualification for the 2019 AFC Asian Cup and led the team to a 13-match unbeatable.

he scored his 90th international goal in a 4-0 win against Pakistan in the 2023 Saff Championship, surpassing Mokhtar Dahari's tally of 89 goals and becoming the second-highest Asian goal scorer behind Ali Daei of Iran.

his 90 goals place him among the top active international goal scorers, behind only Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.
