Julián Álvarez has become Manchester City’s most expensive sale, surpassing the transfers of Raheem Sterling and Ferran Torres. This sale is a big financial success for the club. City originally bought Álvarez from River Plate for just £14 million around the same time Ferran was sold to Barcelona.

why he left mancity

Alvarez , made 103  appearances for City and score 36 goals, delivering a highly efficient performance, but his moment in the squad was overshadowed by Erling Haaland.  making it clear that the new player would always be in Haaland's shadow.  after 2 season with city, he realize, that he would mostly be a substitute and not get many chances to play. 

In his second season, Julián Álvarez played a much bigger role for Manchester City, because some key players were injured. He especially benefited from Kevin De Bruyne being out for a long time and, during late 2023, he was the City player with the most minutes in the Premier League, starting all of the first 25 matches.

he formed a strong partnership with Erling Haaland and stepped up to lead the team, and when Haaland was injured, he score six goals between December and January. However, when De Bruyne and Haaland returned to full fitness, Álvarez had to take a backseat again, and became a substitute in important matches, such as the Manchester Derby and both against Real Madrid in the Champions League.



Even though he came on in those key games, Álvarez missed two big chances against Manchester United in the FA Cup final, which contributed to City’s first loss in over five months.

In the final months of the season, Julián Álvarez felt uncertain about his future at Manchester City. He realized that when all the players were fit, he would mostly be a substitute and not get many chances to play.

By January, Álvarez started thinking about leaving City, and by summer, he began to take steps to make that happen. Stories about his desire to leave began appearing in the Spanish press.

 While at the Olympics, he shared his feelings on Argentine TV, saying he didn’t like being left out of important matches and wanted to help the team more.

so he desires for more first-team opportunities and more playing time and wanted a new challenge to fulfill that ambition.

It became clear that Julián Álvarez could leave Manchester City if the price was right, and City got a great deal, making a big profit on their investment.


City has plan, without Álvarez by signing 18-year-old Claudio Echeverri from River Plate for £12.5 million plus add-ons. They loaned him back to River Plate, so he won’t join the first team this season, but he is seen as an exciting prospect for the future.

Savinho has just joined from Girona, and although the 20-year-old is more of a winger than a like-for-like replacement for Alvarez, he can come close to matching the Argentine’s goals and assists, having spearheaded Girona’s incredible season in 2023-24 with nine strikes and 10 assists. Additionally, Oscar Bobb, who has been impressive in pre-season, is also considered a good option to take over Álvarez's role, and James McAtee is mentioned as another potential choice.

In discussing squad depth, Guardiola noted that players like Oscar Bobb, Phil Foden, James McAtee,  Gundogan, and Bernardo Silva could fill in if needed, although they are different from Haaland. He emphasized the importance of keeping players engaged to enhance team performance.

Kevin De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva. is expected to stay last one season but likely will leave afterward. Meanwhile, Bernardo has been looking for an opportunity to move away and recently lowered his release clause to £50 million, to attract interest from other European clubs.

Imagining a City team, without De Bruyne or Bernardo, is difficult, but the club has a history of being proactive and always looking ahead. Their successful strategy of acquiring Álvarez and selling him for a profit within three years.

Pep Guardiola responded to Álvarez's comments by acknowledging that he wanted to play in important moments, but he reminded everyone that other players wanted the same thing.
